What is cyber security?
Cyber Security can loosely be defined as the use of technologies to protect networks, devices, programs, applications and electronic data. Cyber Security protects electronic assets over the Internet, WAN, LAN or any electronic device used to transmit data. This could be Applications, Network, Infrastructure or Cloud based and is identified as protecting ‘electronic’ or ‘digital’ data. Cyber Security can also be defined as ‘protecting systems against Cyber Threats’.
Cyber Security’s core function is to protect the electronic devices we use, such as smart phones, laptops, PC’s and servers from unauthorised access.
Why is cyber security so important?
Cyber threats can come in many different forms and can be crippling for any business if they do not have the right defences in place. Viruses, worms, spyware, Trojans, ransomware, phishing attacks, social engineering and advanced persistent threats are just some of the array of cyber threats a business could face on a daily basis.
Huge amounts of data is processed and stored across businesses, Military, Corporate, Government, Financial & Medical organisations, much of this data is of a sensitive nature; intellectual property, personal information, financial data, which in the wrong hands by unauthorised access can have massive repercussions.
Breaches and cyber-attacks are increasing at a rapid rate and level of sophistication. Our perimeters are no longer defined as we incorporate the use of BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) and remote working, dissolving the perimeter, reducing visibility and expanding the attack surface, creating potential for perimeter-less attack vectors.
Organisations need to incorporate a number of cyber security systems dependent on the level of information that is processed and the risk attached if that information is exposed.
So how do we do this?
Well, there isn’t one easy answer I’m afraid and no solution or product is going to give you a 100% guarantee against cyber-attack. However, there are a few steps that will set you on your way and we have spent years working with the best of breed solutions and vendors to compile a robust and comprehensive list of solutions that can support you on your quest for a secure environment for you, your employees and you customers, we also offer a range of managed security services for those businesses that don’t currently have an in-house security team.
